INFRARED
SATELLITE WEATHER MAPS
This
directory contains MPEG
animations of GOES
infrared weather images for each night of
2MASS operations. The files are named YYMMDDH.mpg according
to date and hemisphere of observing facility location.
- YY = last
two digits of the
year of observation 97-01
- MM = month
of
observation 01-12
- DD = day
of
observation 01-31
- H = hemisphere
of
observatory location (n for Mt. Hopkins and s for CTIO) n-s
The
file name is based on the UT
calendar date at the morning following
each night of operations. Thus, for example, the movie
990621n.mpg
was taken during the night
preceding the morning of June
21, 1999 at Mt. Hopkins, Arizona.
The
Mt. Hopkins (northern hemisphere)
movie is the GOES 4 km product
centered on the
southwestern United States. The Cerro
Tololo (southern hemisphere) movie is the hemispheric GOES
image centered on South America. Both movies contain time
tag information which ties each image to universal time and date.
The movies were created by an automated script which ran nightly. The
script was similar to the one shown here.
These
weather maps are provided for
information only. They were not routinely used in
the
evaluation of the photometric quality of 2MASS data
products. Photometric quality evaluation is
discussed in
the 2MASS Explanatory Supplement.
